Lymphatic Drainage Massage: Benefits & Who It Helps
2 min readAleks, LMT
Lymphatic drainage is the gentlest of the massage types we offer, and it's built for a completely different purpose than deep tissue or sports massage. Instead of working out muscle tension, it uses very light, rhythmic strokes designed to encourage movement through the lymphatic system — the network that helps the body manage fluid and waste.
At Massage by Aleks, lymphatic drainage is available at our private studio in Westshore or as a mobile session anywhere in our service area.
How It's Different From Other Massage Types
If you've had a deep tissue or sports massage before, lymphatic drainage will feel like a different world. The pressure is extremely light — often lighter than what people expect from a massage — and the movements follow specific directional patterns rather than the kneading or compression used in firmer techniques. It's not meant to feel intense at any point, and it typically isn't performed with oil or deep strokes the way a relaxation massage might be.
Who Books Lymphatic Drainage
People typically come in for this type of session when dealing with general puffiness or fluid retention, particularly in the legs and feet; recovery support after certain cosmetic procedures, when cleared by a doctor to receive massage; or simply wanting a very light-touch session as an alternative to firmer techniques. It's worth being clear that this isn't a treatment for lymphedema or any diagnosed medical condition — if you've been told you have a lymphatic or circulatory condition, check with your doctor before booking any massage, including this one.
What a Session Looks Like
A typical session runs 45 to 60 minutes. The pace is slow and deliberate throughout, working in the direction that supports natural fluid movement, usually starting closer to the torso and moving outward toward the hands and feet. There's no deep pressure at any point, which makes this one of the more relaxing options on our menu even though it's technically a specialized technique rather than a general relaxation massage.
If you're looking for something that also addresses muscle tension rather than just lightness, myofascial release sits somewhere between this and deep tissue work, and it's worth reading about if you're not sure which is the better fit. For general soreness after activity, our recovery massage guide covers a firmer alternative.
